Guides

You will be getting a pre-tour email regarding your guide team prior to departure. In addition to basic info, such as their name, it will also have phone contacts should you need to reach them while in transit or if you can't seem to connect in the airport. You can also relay messages via our main office if you get delayed enroute.

Tipping

While tipping is not mandatory, it is always a nice way to say thanks for a job well done and greatly appreciated by your crew. We would like to offer the following suggested amounts for your crew members, of course subject to how well or how far above the call of duty they went. (suggestions are per guest per crew member)

Travel Needs

Meeting Point & Time

Your tour crew will meet the group at the AMHS Ferry Docks in Haines, Alaska. Ferry tickets from Juneau to Haines are included in the tour price. See the ferry section below for more info.

Flight Requirements

The Alaska Yukon Adventure tour uses Juneau International Airport as the arrival gateway and Anchorage International Airport as the departure point.

You need to plan your flights to arrive before the time listed below and to depart afterwards. We suggest arriving a day or two early, because Juneau is a beautiful city to explore and to allow time in case your baggage or flights are delayed.
    Arrive: Fly into Juneau (JNU) before 6 am on Day 1
    Depart: Fly out of Anchorage (ANC) after 7 pm on Day 16

Due to flight schedules most folks plan to arrive early and depart the day or two after it ends.

Juneau to Haines ferry

Tickets for the Juneau to Haines ferry on Day 1 of the tour are included in the tour price. However that leg will be self-guided, your tour crew will not be on-board the ferry, but will be awaiting your arrival in Haines.

Guests will need to check in at the AMHS Ferry office to pick up your boarding documents. You will need to show your passport as id (even though it sails entirely in US water) when you pick up your boarding documents, as well as when you actually board. You can pick up your boarding documents anytime prior to departure (even a day or two ahead).

An email with additional ferry details will be sent a few weeks prior to departure. This email will have final schedule notes (boarding time, check in time), your booking number and ship's name.

All guests need to fill out the TSA Questionnaire, as well as the Guest Questionnaire. Homeland Security requires that we provide the details asked for in the TSA questionnaire.

NOTE: If you plan to bring your own bike, we need to know a couple of months in advance to update your ferry booking with your bike. There is no surcharge from Pedalers for bringing your bike on the ferry, but likewise there is no discount for not using our tour bikes.

Visa and Passport needs

Passports are required for all guests joining the Alaska Yukon Adventure. Your passport should have at least 6 months validity left on the date your trip starts. Most airlines will not let you board without, so don't show up hoping to talk your way on-board, get your passport renewed well in advance.

Visas are not required for this tour for citizens of the USA and Canada. Citizens of other countries should check with the nearest USA and Canada Embassies or Consulates.

Guests are responsible for obtaining a passport and the necessary visas or other travel documents necessary for your trip (including any transit points enroute to or from the tour). No refunds will be issued if you are prohibited from traveling due to your failure to obtain the necessary documents, nor will Pedalers be responsible for any additional costs should you have to change your routing during the tour due to your failure to obtain the necessary documents.

Vaccinations & Health needs

No travel immunizations are necessary to enter the USA or Canada.

Destination Info

Currency, Exchange & ATMs

ATMs are available in our bigger stops (Haines, Haines Junction (private machine), Beaver Creek (private machine), Delta Junction, Glenallen, Valdez). Most take a wide range of cards, Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus, Plus.

A few things to keep in mind though:
  • Both Local ATM providers AND your bank back home may charge a fee for using the ATM.
  • If you have multiple accounts tied to a single debit card, international ATMs will usually default to your current or checking account.

For our international guests, both the USA and Canada use Dollars as their currency, with the USA issuing paper notes in the amounts of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 dollars, and Canada issuing notes in the amounts of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, plus coins for 1 & 2 dollars. The two currencies are NOT on par and exchange rates over the past few years have fluctuated between 0.95 & 0.75 CAD to 1.0 USD.

Cell Phones & Internet

Cellular phone service through the Yukon is spotty, with coverage in the cities and towns along the way, but not much outside. Each year a bit more coverage gets added, but one should not count on being able to call home every night. Service in the Alaska is available along most of the route. Travelers coming from outside the USA & Canada, need to check if their phone accommodates the North American frequencies (800 / 1900 mHz).

Wifi will be available at a few of our stops. This service is free at some stops and at extra cost at others. While decent speeds will be available in the bigger cities, in the countryside it will be much slower. We suggest that you not plan on any video streaming or other such hi-speed oriented downloads.

Power

Both the USA and Canada use 110V 60Hz power. The outlets are set up to use flat bladed plugs.

Most modern electronics now accommodate voltage ranges from 110V to 220V, so a power converter usually is not necessary if your camera, phone, laptop have been built within the last 5 to 10 years.

Weather

Summer in the far north is pleasant, with cool evenings and warm days. The earlier part of June may see crisp evenings with temperatures dropping down to or below freezing, but warming back up in the daytime.

In Camp

Because of the areas and conditions in which this tour operates, what goes on in camp will be different than other tours you may have done in the continental USA or lower Canada. Please review this info as you prepare for your tour, so you are prepared and aware.

Your Campsite

Many of our campgrounds are commercial sites where we have access to running water, flush toilets and hot showers. However some evenings will be in government run campgrounds in State or Provincial Parks, National Forests, etc. These later campgrounds tend to be simpler with outhouses or basic bathrooms with running water.

Each campground will assign Pedalers sites for our use and in most cases we will be setting up at least two tents per assigned spot. We ask that guests stick with our assigned spots and not infringe upon our neighbors by setting up elsewhere.

Some campgrounds have coin operated showers, cost for which will be the guest's responsibility (allowing you to shower as long or as quickly as you wish).

Food & Drink

Meals provided include a cooked breakfast and dinner on camping nights and lunch stops during the cycling (number per day based on distance). We provide a variety of foods and in reasonable quantity to recharge for cycling. But due to limits on how much food we can safely carry with us and the lack of stores along our routes, we can not accommodate food or snack requests outside meal times. If you have a high metabolism and need to eat between meals or immediately after riding, we suggest bringing snacks and energy bars to supplement your needs.

A drink cooler with soft drinks and beer is available at dinner time. The first one is on us, any additional beers are $2 each, sodas $1 each. This is an honor system, there will be a money cup near the drinks for payment. Selection is dependent on local availability, but we try to have a variety to choose from.

These drinks are available ONLY at dinner time, they are not available at breakfast, lunch or early afternoon in camp. As with foods, we are limited on how many drinks we carry and where we can restock.

We do not use disposable paper or plastic eating utensils and plates for meals in camp, rather we use washable, reusable items. Each guest will be provided with a set of eating utensils, plate, bowl, cup and kitchen towel. Our crew will set up a washing station after each meal, BUT guests will be responsible for washing their assigned items. Do not expect your guides to wash your dishes, they have enough to wash with all the cooking gear.

Bear Precautions in Camp.

Our trip travels through country inhabited by bears, with both Black and Grizzly Bears. For the most part, the bears could care less about us and give us plenty of berth, but like most animals the smell of human food is enticing.

Absolutely NO FOOD is to be taken into or eaten inside the tents. NO EXCEPTIONS! Afternoon or evening snacks should be eaten outside the tent.

Likewise no toiletries should be inside the tents at any point in time in camp. ALL snacks, energy bars, drink mixes, energy gels and ALL toiletries should be placed in the "Bear Box" container sitting by the kitchen trailer. This container will be stored inside the kitchen trailer at night. Please close the bear box lid whenever you are done storing or accessing your items.

We suggest bringing a small nylon bag or similar to keep your foods and toiletries in. There will be other guests sharing the bear box, so keeping your gear in a single bag (or a single food bag plus a separate toilet kit), makes it easier to find and keeps snacks from being mixed up.

In campgrounds without a full bathroom with sinks, when brushing your teeth, please go to the forested edge of your campsite, to rinse your mouth and squirt a bit more water to break up any foam on the ground.

Please note that these bear precautions are mandatory. Any guest who chooses to ignore these rules will be expelled from the tour for the safety of the other guests. There is no refund if the guides eject you for this or other issues.

Community Zone

Your guides will be setting up a "dining/relaxing" area in camp each night near where the support vehicles are parked. We will have folding chairs available, canopies if the skies look rainy and can wrap the whole thing with mosquito nets if the little devils are pesky.

The area around the support vans, kitchen trailer and dining canopy is a work area. Your guides need to pack away the kitchen before they go to sleep and set it up again in the morning. As such, this area is not a quiet area and folks wishing to go to sleep earlier should not set up nearby, as the crew can not forego their chores because you were too lazy to set up further away. We also ask that guests wanting to stay up later and talk, that they hang out in the dining canopy area.

Camp Time

Because we enjoy extremely long daylight hours and don't suffer from afternoon heat, there is no reason to start earlier on longer days. Each day starts at the same time, with an occasional dinner time pushed back to accommodate a very long ride.

The average day starts with coffee ready at 7:30ish and hot food at 8. Dinners are served around 6:30, or later on very long days. On century days we schedule dinner late enough for folks to have time to shower or clean up before dinner.
