What Makes the Journey Different

Chiang Mai is the gateway rather than the main event. The first riding day loops south of the city to the ruins of Wiang Kum Kam and the woodcarving workshops of Baan Tawai. From there, the journey turns north through the Mae Ping valley toward markets, temple complexes, farmland, forest roads and cave shrines.

The trip is less about a single headline attraction than about how northern Thailand accumulates around the rider. Lanna history, living craft traditions, Burmese architectural influence, roadside food and everyday agricultural landscapes appear naturally along a week of riding rather than as isolated sightseeing stops.

Editorial Angles

Chiang Mai as a Starting Point, Not the Destination

The tour uses Thailand's best-known northern city as a doorway into the surrounding countryside, where villages, markets, temples and agricultural valleys become the real focus of the week.

Old Kingdoms and Living Craft Traditions

Wiang Kum Kam brings the thirteenth-century Lanna world into the route, while Baan Tawai's woodworkers, Mae Malai's market and rural temples show cultural traditions that remain part of everyday life.

Eating Northern Thailand Along the Way

Northern dishes, market meals and guide-selected restaurants help distinguish the region from the rest of the country. Sai ua, herb-rich curries and riverside dinners become another way of reading the route.

Through Northern Thailand

  • Wiang Kum Kam & Baan Tawai - 35 km: Begin among ancient ruins before visiting a village known for its woodcarving workshops.
  • Mae Ping Valley - 50 km: Follow quieter river roads through flower farms, rice country and temple villages.
  • Mae Malai & Mae Ping Gorge - 92 km: Visit a local market and Wat Baan Den before riding through greener gorge country toward the Chiang Dao area.
  • Fang & Wat Tham Tub Tao - 63 km: Pass hill-country markets and a giant Buddha before exploring a cave temple filled with hundreds of Buddha images.
  • Northern valleys & Mae Kok - 64 km: Finish the riding through agricultural country where Burmese architectural influences appear in rural temples before a riverside farewell dinner.

How Pedalers Runs the Trip

Guides: Local, English-speaking Thai guides lead the riding and provide cultural, route and logistical support throughout the week.

Bicycles: The standard bicycle is a Merida Speeder, a lightweight flat-bar road bike designed for efficient riding with a more upright position than a drop-bar road bike. eBikes are available as an optional upgrade.

Support: A support van carries baggage and purified drinking water and provides ride breaks when needed.

Accommodation: The trip uses locally styled boutique hotels and smaller properties chosen for their connection to Northern Thailand. Several draw on Lanna or regional Thai architecture, while others are defined by riverside, rice-field or mountain settings rather than a conventional resort feel.

Food: Food is a major part of the week. Dinners are served family style, with the guide team curating a different menu each night so guests can try a broad range of Thai and Northern Thai dishes. Very few items are repeated unless guests ask to have a favorite again, while markets and roadside stops add another layer to the regional food story.
