Cycling The Real Wyoming

Big Skies and Quiet Roads in Western Wyoming

Pedalers | Wyoming, USA | Guided Bicycle Tour

A 6-day cycling journey through western Wyoming beyond the state's famous national parks, linking Togwotee Pass country with Dubois, Lander, Atlantic City, South Pass, Farson, Pinedale and the Hoback Valley before returning to Jackson.

Riding days range from 38 to 74 mi. The route uses paved highways through ranch country, river valleys and high desert, while the support vehicle handles substantial portions of the larger mountain climbs so the trip remains about moving through Wyoming rather than collecting passes.

What Makes the Journey Different

This is Wyoming outside the national-park frame. The route begins high in the forest near Togwotee Pass, then moves through open ranchlands, river valleys, small western towns, historic mining country and high desert before finishing in the Hoback Valley.

The tour is deliberately not built around grinding over every major pass. Pedalers uses the support vehicle for substantial portions of the bigger climbs near Togwotee and South Pass, leaving riders with selected climbing sections, long descents and miles of open-country cycling where the state's scale is the real attraction.

Editorial Angles

Wyoming Beyond Yellowstone and Grand Teton

Dubois, Lander, South Pass, Pinedale and the Wind River country reveal a western landscape shaped by ranching, mining, small towns and open roads rather than park entrances and resort crowds.

Ghost Towns, Ranch Towns and One Very Large Ice Cream

Atlantic City and South Pass City connect the route with Wyoming's mining past, while Dubois, Lander, Pinedale and Farson show the more ordinary western communities that keep the state grounded in the present.

A Mountain-State Ride Without Pass-Bagging

Wyoming's peaks dominate the horizon, but the itinerary uses shuttles strategically on the biggest climbs. Riders still cross serious western terrain while spending more time on the valleys, open roads and long descents that make the route enjoyable.

Across Western Wyoming

  • Togwotee Pass to Dubois - 38 mi: Begin near Hatchet Resort, climb a selected section toward the pass and descend through forest toward Brooks Lake and the western town of Dubois.
  • Dubois to Lander - 74 mi: Follow the Wind River through rolling hills, open prairie and small ranching communities on the longest riding day.
  • Atlantic City to Farson - 43 mi: Visit Atlantic City and South Pass City before a long downhill ride toward Farson and its famously oversized ice cream cones.
  • Pinedale to Hoback Junction - 47 mi: Ride past Fremont Lake and through the Green River Valley, with distant Wind River Range views, before finishing where the Hoback and Snake rivers meet.

How Pedalers Runs the Trip

Guides: Local Pedalers guides handle navigation, daily logistics and the practical details of riding through widely spaced western towns and open country.

Bicycles: A quality bicycle suited to the route is included. Exact make and model can vary with local availability and are confirmed for each departure.

Support: The support vehicle carries luggage, handles the planned mountain shuttles and provides convenient lifts during the riding day. Detailed route information is also provided.

Accommodation: The overnight stops reinforce the western character of the route: a historic 1950s mountain resort near Togwotee Pass, handcrafted log cabins in Dubois, a restored 1904 schoolhouse in Pinedale and a final inn close to Jackson Town Square.

Food: Wyoming is more about big landscapes than culinary fireworks, and the meals fit the place: trout, barbecue, steaks, burgers, local beef and practical roadside picnics, served in mountain-town restaurants and lodge dining rooms after a day on the road.
