A Few Things You May Be Wondering
How fit do I need to be for an eBike tour in Thailand?
Our eBikes are pedal-assist bicycles, not motorcycles. You still have to pedal to move down the road, while the motor adds assistance to reduce the effort required. That makes hills and longer riding days considerably easier, but you will still be cycling for several hours and on consecutive days. Basic cycling comfort and reasonable general fitness will make the trip much more enjoyable.
Do I need previous eBike experience?
No. Anyone comfortable riding a conventional bicycle can usually adapt quickly to an eBike. Before the first ride, your guides explain the controls, assistance levels, braking and handling and give you time to become familiar with the bike.
How does the electric assistance work?
Pedalers' eBikes use pedal assistance. The motor adds power while you pedal, with several assistance levels that you can change as the terrain changes. You decide how much help you want. On flat ground you may use very little assistance, then increase it for a hill or when your legs would appreciate a little cooperation.
Are Thailand's hills manageable on an eBike?
That is one of the great advantages of an eBike. Climbs that might dominate the day on a conventional bicycle become much more manageable with pedal assistance. You still need to pedal and control the bike, but the motor allows riders to tackle rolling and hilly terrain with considerably less effort.
How far can an eBike travel on one charge?
Battery range depends on several factors, including terrain, rider weight, assistance level and how frequently the motor is used at maximum power. Our itineraries are planned around the capabilities of the bikes, and your guides can help you manage assistance levels during the day.
What happens if my battery starts running low?
Our eBike batteries can be swapped during the riding day, and most trips carry a couple of spare batteries for that purpose. That provides useful backup, but it is not a free ticket to ride at maximum assistance all day. Your guides can help you choose appropriate assistance levels so you get the help you need while making sensible use of the battery.
Are the eBikes charged every night?
Yes. Batteries are recharged between riding days so the bikes begin each day's ride ready to go. Charging is handled as part of the normal tour routine.
What if I need a break or cannot finish the day's ride?
That is one reason our eBike tours are fully supported. If you are tired, uncomfortable or simply decide you have ridden enough for the day, you can usually take a break in the support vehicle and rejoin the ride later or continue to the hotel. An eBike makes the riding easier, but there is still no reason to turn the day into an endurance contest.
Can solo travelers join your Thailand eBike tours?
Yes. Solo travelers regularly join our small-group departures, and the group size makes it easy to become part of the trip rather than feeling like an extra among couples or friends traveling together. Individual tour pages show any applicable single-room pricing or supplement.
Can my travel companion use a regular bike on an eBike tour?
Yes. A travel companion who prefers a regular bicycle can choose one while you use an eBike. This can work particularly well for couples or friends with different riding strengths, allowing everyone to enjoy the same route at a comfortable level of effort.
Can an experienced cyclist still get a good workout on an eBike?
Certainly. You control how much assistance the motor provides, and you can turn the assistance off completely and simply pedal. Because an eBike is heavier than a regular bicycle, someone who expects to ride mostly without assistance will usually be happier choosing a regular bike from the outset. Regular bikes are available on our Thailand eBike tours, but riders should choose one bike type for the trip rather than planning to swap back and forth between the two.
Do Thailand's heat and humidity affect eBike riders?
Yes. An eBike reduces the physical effort required, particularly on climbs, but it does not make Thailand's tropical climate disappear. Riders still need to be prepared for heat and humidity. We plan riding days around local conditions, with water, breaks and earlier starts where appropriate, while pedal assistance can make riding in warmer conditions considerably more comfortable.
Are eBikes harder to handle because they are heavier?
They are heavier than conventional bicycles, largely because of the motor and battery. Once moving, most riders adapt quickly, but the extra weight is noticeable when starting, stopping or maneuvering at very low speed. This is one reason we allow time to become comfortable with the bike before heading out on the road.
Can I use an eBike if I have not cycled much recently?
Possibly, but an eBike is not a substitute for being comfortable on a bicycle. Pedal assistance can make the physical effort much easier, but you still need the balance, braking and road awareness required for several hours of riding. Some preparation before the trip is always worthwhile, even for an eBike tour.
What happens if there is a mechanical problem with the eBike?
Your guides and support team handle routine mechanical issues during the tour. If a problem cannot be resolved immediately, the support vehicle provides another layer of backup so a mechanical issue does not have to derail the day.
