Thailand bicycle tour day by day details  

Day 1: Chiang Mai's Ancient Heart

Your journey begins in the heart of Chiang Mai. We'll meet in the early afternoon for a walking tour through the Old City, discovering ancient stupa ruins that whisper tales of centuries past and exploring historic wats (temples) nestled among the vibrant shops and houses of locals. We'll gather for an orientation and bike fitting, ensuring everyone is comfortable and prepared for the adventure ahead, before heading out to savor the rich flavors of Lanna cuisine.

Day 2: Riverside Rides & Ancient Origins

To avoid the morning rush hour, we'll shuttle out to the Wiang Khum Kam Visitor Center, where our cycling adventure truly begins. We'll explore the ruins of this ancient city, originally founded 735 years ago, before Chiang Mai. Our route then turns south, following the meandering course of the Mae Ping (Ping River), passing through quaint villages, alongside fish farms, and through expansive longan orchards. Tonight, we'll unwind at our hotel in Chom Thong, relaxing by the tranquil riverside.

Day 3: Alpine Ascents & Farm Delights

We'll take a walking break to explore the dramatic Ob Luang Gorge, marveling at its natural beauty, before reaching the tiny village of Bo Luang. Here, we'll spend the night at a charming farm stay, enjoying a delicious farm-to-table dinner.

Day 4: Himalayan Views & River Valleys

Your route today stays high in the Thong Chai Mountain Range, cycling up and down a series of smaller ridgelines as we traverse what many geologists believe to be the southeastern end of the Himalayas. In the afternoon, we'll enjoy a thrilling downhill run to the Yuam River Valley, where we'll spend the night in Mae Sariang. Relax on the balcony of your room, overlooking the serene river, before enjoying a delicious dinner.

As the day progresses, the terrain becomes more challenging, featuring steeper ascents and winding roads that test our endurance and navigation skills. Midway through, we'll take a rest break to rehydrate and absorb the serene surroundings. We'll continue through dense forests, catching glimpses of streams, waterfalls, and vibrant local villages, providing cultural insights and photographic opportunities. After a lunch break, the afternoon ride brings more stunning vistas and cultural encounters, culminating in a late afternoon arrival at the peaceful village of Khum Yuan.

Our hotel is nestled in rice paddies on the edge of town, yet within easy walking distance of all the interesting aspects of this charming destination.

Day 8: Caves & Mountain Passes

Today is what you've been building up your legs for, as we tackle a couple of big climbs crossing back over the Thong Chai Mountain Range. We'll take a short break from cycling to visit Tham Pla, the fascinating fish cave, and the unique So Tong Bamboo Bridge, before starting the first major climb. If time allows, we'll visit the spectacular Tham Lod cave and witness the evening return of some 300,000 swallows.

Day 9: Pai's Mountain Charm
  • Climb 1000 meters in 17 kms.
  • Descend to mountain town of Pai.

We face one long uphill this morning, gaining 1000 meters in 17 kilometers, a challenging but rewarding climb. This is followed by a long, exhilarating downhill run to the mountain town of Pai. You'll have the afternoon free to explore this old hippy paradise. Perhaps visit the hot springs, ride out to Pai Canyon, or simply relax at the hotel and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.

Day 10: Downhill Roller Coaster & River Valley
  • Cycle over high mountain points.
  • Descend to Ping River Valley.

The grand finale of our alpine cycling tour takes us over one of the highest points of the ride, followed by a thrilling downhill roller coaster, descending and climbing again and again until we find ourselves at the edge of the Ping River Valley. We finish our descent out of the mountains into the valley, passing Mae Malai. Our ride then picks up quiet farm roads along the Klong Kiat, an irrigation canal, offering beautiful panoramic views of the valley and its surrounding mountains, with minimal traffic. We'll end the ride at Wat Mae Ket Noi, with its Good & Evil teaching garden full of rather bizarre and colorful statuary. We shuttle from here to our hotel to avoid the downtown traffic of Chiang Mai.

Getting there

The Valley of the Mists tour meets and ends at Chiang Mai International Airport in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Guides will meet arriving flights, between 9:00 and 14:00

Guests should plan their flights to arrive in Chiang Mai before 14:00 (2 pm) on Day 1 of the tour and their departing flights from Chiang Mai after 10:00 (10 am) on Day 7.

  Travel Tip:   Buying your domestic flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai separately from your international flight to Thailand is often a better value. But do leave sufficient time between flights (3 hours suggested).
